Dear Legionaries and friends of the Legion of Mary
7 September 2007

A Happy 86th anniversary since the first meeting of the Association of Our Lady of Mercy, what we now know as the Legion of Mary, on this vigil of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary!

Listening to Catholic Relevant Radio today, 820 AM in Chicago on the radio dial, I heard the “Saint of the Day,” sponsored by the Franciscans. They mentioned that today is the Feast of Blessed Frederic Ozanam, the founder of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. It made me think of the debt Servant of God Frank Duff, and hence all of us in the Legion of Mary, owes to French Catholics. I believe Brother Duff was in the St. Vincent de Paul Society, founded by a Frenchman, naming the society in honor of another Frenchman. Of course, he was enamored with the writings of St. Louis Marie de Montfort. If I am not mistaken, some French bishops and their priests were quicker to accept the Legion of Mary than Irish bishops and their priests. Given all that, let us pray for the Church in France, once known as “the eldest daughter of the Church,” who have seen Mass attendance plunge.

My prayers and best wishes to all, particularly those hosting any gathering or prayer service in honor of Our Lady’s birthday.
