Curia Attendance

Filed under: About the Legion of Mary — Chrysostom @ 5:02 pm

Oficers of attached praesidia are required to attend every Curia meeting. Officers who have an excused absence, e.g. sickness, work, school, family commitment or vacation, are to contact the Curia Vice President and ask to be excused from the meeting. Praesidia officers that are not present at a meeting and do not have an excused absence are marked as “Absent”, i.e. AWOL. AWOL is a military tendacronym reflecting the fact that a soldier is missing and there is no known reason for the soldier’s absence. Members, of course, do their best to keep the excused absences to a minimum and should abhor the term AWOL. Members who miss a meeting, miss the opportunity to rejuvenate their Legion zeal, to learn from and comment on Legion reports, and share in Legion camaraderie, Missing two or more meetings in a row or in close proximity to each other is a cause for concern.

I am all yours, my Queen, my Mother, and all that I have is yours

Filed under: About the Legion of Mary — Chrysostom @ 1:15 am

The centeral parts of the centeral function of the Legion of Mary are the individual consecration of the legionary to Mary, and the collective consecreation to Mary.  With the words, “I am all yours, my Queen, my Mother, and all that I have is yours,” the legionary consecrates himself to his mother and his queen.  When all legionaries have resumed their places, an act of consecration to Our Lady is said aloud by the priest on behalf of all present.

Buying the Right to Listen

Filed under: About the Legion of Mary — Chrysostom @ 10:11 am

From The Spirit of Home Visitation…

Another item of the legionary code - dealing chiefly with the visitation of praesidia by their curiae - prescribes that the visitors be sparing with words of criticism; that they must earn the right to say one word of criticism by speaking at least ten words of appreciation. In this matter of talking in the homes I would venture to go even further and to say that we should buy our right to utter one word by listening to fifty of them - perhaps more.

Mortification in the Legion Handbook

Filed under: About the Legion of Mary — Chrysostom @ 2:23 pm

ALLOCUTIO BY REV. FR. BEDE McGREGOR O.P.
SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR TO CONCILIUM

This is the last meeting of Concilium before Lent begins so I thought it might be helpful to reflect on the spirit and practice of mortification or self-denial according to the Handbook. It is a subject that is not very popular today and perhaps it has always been a topic we shy away from. It means denying ourselves something in order to be and to do something more worthwhile. It means giving up anything that hinders or diminishes our personal friendship with Christ. The Handbook tells us mortification is self-discipline in order to love God and others for the sake of God. It is necessary because of original sin, which darkens our minds and weakens our will and inclines us easily to sin. What does this mean in the daily life of a Legionary?

Legion of Mary and Politics

Filed under: About the Legion of Mary, News — Chrysostom @ 9:46 pm

I recently received an e-mail from Fr. Frank Pavone, who is the head of Priests for Life, and has been leading the fight to protect human life for a number of years.  The e-mail was his endorcement of Senator Sam Brownback to be the next President of the U.S.

The e-mail reminded me that it is about time to remind everyone that the Legion of Mary is not a political organization.  According to the Legion of Mary Handbook, “No legionary body shall allow its influence or its premises to be used for any political purpose or to aid any political party.” (more…)

Battle Hymn of the Legion

Filed under: About the Legion of Mary — Chrysostom @ 10:13 pm

Battle Hymn of the Legion

Our eyes have seen the glory of the rising of the dawn; She is lovely as the moon and she is brilliant as the son; More awesome than the armies all the world has gazed upon; Her Legion Marches on. (Chorus)

Chorus: All is in the hand of Mary. In the mighty hand of Mary. All is in the hand of Mary. Her Legion Marches on

In the member’s daily building of the Body of the Lord; In the effort of the envoy off in country unexplored; In the courage of the martyr facing prison or the sword; Her spirit marches on.  (Chorus)

We will forge ahead united with her standard high unfurled; We will follow her to battle for the conquest of the world; We will fight til every evil to the depth of hell is hurled; Our Legion marches on. (Chorus).
