Legion of Mary and Politics
I recently received an e-mail from Fr. Frank Pavone, who is the head of Priests for Life, and has been leading the fight to protect human life for a number of years. The e-mail was his endorcement of Senator Sam Brownback to be the next President of the U.S.Â
The e-mail reminded me that it is about time to remind everyone that the Legion of Mary is not a political organization. According to the Legion of Mary Handbook, “No legionary body shall allow its influence or its premises to be used for any political purpose or to aid any political party.”
Legionaries should not pass out political liturature for candidates or endorce specific candidates when doing their Legion works; nor should they do so at their Legion meetings. Rather, Legionairies should focus on encouraging people to receive the sacrements, pray, and become active in their faith. When in doubt of what is acceptable, Legionairies should check with their local council and/or the Legion of Mary Handbook.
